About Us

The Santa Maria Valley Humane Society (SMVHS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in 1982, operates out of Santa Maria, and provides its services to the local community, including a No Kill Adoption Program and Low-cost Spay/Neuter Clinic. Originally an all volunteer-run organization without an operating shelter, SMVHS has since built a permanent facility and added paid staff in order to address the growing need to care for the adoptable animals and tackle northern Santa Barbara County's rising animal overpopulation crisis. Responding to the tremendous need to supply the public with affordable spay/neuter services, SMVHS operned its low-cost clinic in 1998, and it remains as the only permanent low-cost spay/neuter clinic available to the public between Monterey to Buellton.

The clinic provides the community with affordable discounted sterilization surgeries for public residents' pets five days per week, ensure that 100% of our adoptable animals are spayed/neutered, and works with feral cat rescue organizations to reduce the number of future feral kittens.

Our new, larger facility was built to accommodate the area's expanding human and animal populations and will give us significantly more resources and space to house adoptable animals and spay/neuter public animals. To date, the SMVHS Adoption Program has adopted over 11,000 animals to loving homes and the Low-cost Spay/Neuter Clinic has spayed/neutered over 31,000 animals! As our organization grows, we will have the ability to greatly increase the services we provide to the public and animals.

Did you know?

SMVHS is not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States or the ASPCA? Many people misunderstand and tell us they sent our donations to "headquarters." Please know that our only location is here in Santa Maria and donations sent straight to us help animals right here in your community. We GREATLY appreciate your support!!

How We Work

The support of our community is truly what enables us to do this important work for the animals. Annually, we must raise over $800,000 per year to help support our adoption program and low cost spay/neuter clinic. This is a big job! Dollars raised from membership, fundraisers, general donations, and grants, along with donations of animal supplies from individuals and local businesses are essential to keeping our doors open to help animals in need. Additionally, we rely on hundreds of hours of volunteer time every month to ensure that our animals are cared for and the daily business of running the adoption center and clinic is successfully handled. Our dedicated, animal-loving staff manage all aspects of animal care, the adoption process, low cost spay/neuter services, and fundraising efforts.

Mission Statement

“The mission of the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society is to provide compassionate care and find loving homes for companion animals in need, address overpopulation, and engage the community through education and advocacy."

Core Values

We manage and allocate our resources to remain steadfast to our mission, to achieve the greatest good, and to ensure the future of our organization.

Quality Care

Our actions and decisions are based on providing the best medical and shelter care and services to the most companion animals. We respect the life of each individual animal while focusing on the welfare of staff, community, and the animal population as a whole.

Community Focused

We enrich the community we serve by providing education, information, and referral about the humane treatment of all animals.

We treat all persons with dignity and respect in a non-judgemental manner. The general public, our staff members, and volunteers are all viewed as our partners in fullfilling our mission.

Our Goals

  • To give compassionate and high quality shelter and care to dogs and cats while they await loving, permanent homes.
  • To take in and adopt out as many dogs and cats as possible to save lives and reduce overcrowding at area shelters.
  • To serve as a "safe haven" for animals that people are no longer able to keep.
  • To eliminate pet overpopulation.
  • To ensure that spay/neuter services are truly accessible and affordable for our community.
  • To help Santa Barbara County reach "no kill" status.
  • To educate the public about responsible pet ownership.
