Based on the estimated population of some 250,000 living in our community by 2015, we are in the process of planning, building and eventually operating a 21,000+ sq.ft. animal care complex consisting of an adoption center, indoor/outdoor catteries, 52 indoor/outdoor adoption dog kennels with five outdoor exercise yards, a large multi-purpose education community room, retail area, cat and dog food bank, expanded low-cost spay and neuter clinic, observation/isolation units for cats and dogs, 24/7 caretaker apartment, maintenance and storage area, member cat and dog boarding facility, and memorial park. In addition, SMVHS and Allan Hancock College (AHC) are working on a collaborative effort to establish a Registered Veterinary Technician program, with academic courses offered at AHC and hands-on veterinary care instruction offered at the SMVHS spay and neuter clinic. The future concept calls for a columbarium located in the memorial park.
The City of Santa Maria Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit on March 4, 2009, and a committe was appointed to select a general contractor, Blough Construction. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held on May 20, 2009, the official groundbreaking held on July 22, 2010, with relocation planned for 2011. PET PROJECT will enable the SMVHS to receive and adopt out twice as many dogs and cats, and greatly enhance our vital services to the community. Make a Donation Today!
