Santa Maria Valley Humane Society is a center of excellence where animals and people interact and learn together in a pleasant, friendly environment. Every encounter with an animal at our shelter is designed to teach manners or skills to our dogs and cats so they gain confidence and adapt to a new home. We hope you visit and participate in our Open Paw program soon!
Steps to Adopting
Finding Love – Santa Maria Valley Humane Society is open for adoptions Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. See our off-site adoption partners page for PetSmart, Petco and Cat Therapy locations and hours. Visit in person to meet our animals, or search our website for up-to-date animal profiles. We rescue new animals all the time, so check back for updates!
Meet and Greet – Our shelter offers “get acquainted” spaces where prospective adopters can become familiar with our animals. If you already have a dog, we love for you to bring him or her along for a “meet and greet.” Our adoption counselors can provide coaching for you and your pet to help welcome a new family member.
Adopt – The adoption process at Santa Maria Valley Humane Society and with our off-site adoption partners is the same. Please allow about 30 minutes for an informal interview process and to complete an adoption agreement. Every animal presented for adoption by the Humane Society is ready to go to their new home. Dogs, cats, puppies and kittens have been examined by a veterinarian, fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and permanently identified with a microchip. All animals also go home with a gift of discounted pet health insurance, a free health examination by a private practice veterinarian, and a supply of Purina® pet food. Adopters must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid state-issued identification. We accept cash, Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express for payment.
Fees – With food, shelter, veterinary care, behavior assessments, and training, Santa Maria Valley Humane Society invests between $300 and $1,000 to make every pet ready for a new home. The cost to adopt an animal is as follows:
Animal Type / Age Minimum Fee Maximum Fee
Kitten (Under 6 Months) $125 $265
Cat (6 Months to 7 Years) $80 $170
Senior Cat (Over 7 Years) $65 $155
Puppy (Under 1 Year) $160 $300
Dog (1 Year to 7 Years) $125 $215
Senior Dog (Over 7 Years) $100 $190
Follow-up – Within 5 days after you adopt a new pet, our counselors will contact you by phone to check in. We will ask how your new pet is adjusting to his or her new home and we will want to hear any questions or concerns that you may have. We are here to help you and your new pet create a successful life together. Bark University, seminar and hands-on training classes with you and your new pet, is available to every adopter.
