Our Mission
The mission of the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society is to further the interests and improve the lives of dogs and cats by educating and influencing public opinion with respect to the care, treatment and welfare of animals; to provide shelter, food, and medical care for those dogs and cats surrendered to us for adoption and to find appropriate homes for them; to offer informational programs in the community’s elementary schools; to operate a low cost spay and neuter clinic offered to the public; and to take and active part in the enforcement of those laws of the State of California enacted for the prevention of cruelty to animals. |

No Kill
The SMVHS is a “no kill” facility. We have a medical euthanasia policy wherein only those animals whose physical or mental suffering is beyond professional veterinary care may be candidates for euthanasia. Animals that are deemed a significant danger to other animals, themselves or the public are candidates for euthanasia only after exhaustive efforts have been made for their rehabilitation.
Less than 1% of the animals that enter our shelter reach a level of medical deterioration that requires us to consider euthanasia.

Who We Are
The Santa Maria Valley Humane Society was founded in 1983 as a 501 c3 entity. It is a membership-based organization and membership contributes to our financial resources as well as directs the leadership, policies and practices of the organization. The SMVHS has been in operation at its current location on Black Road in Santa Maria since 1990 and in that time it has served the community by accepting and adopting out thousands of dogs and cats. In 1998, the Society built and opened a clinic facility in order to offer low cost spay and neutering performed by local veterinarians.
The Humane Society is the only “no kill” animal control facility in the area and is committed to helping the community find safe, loving homes for unwanted pets and to reducing the population of unwanted animals through its spay and neuter education program. A large volunteer team works in conjunction with paid staff to care for the animals, educate the community, and raise funding and awareness for this important community service. |
