Surrendering a Pet

The Santa Maria Valley Humane Society is a community resource for pets when their families can no longer care for them. We are a managed admission animal shelter, accepting pets from the public as space permits by appointment. We schedule relinquishment appointments on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday between 1 pm & 6 pm. To schedule an appointment, call 805-349-3435, extension 5, or email intake@smvhs.org. A scheduled appointment does not guarantee acceptance.

Start by filling out an Animal Intake Profile.

General Criteria for Surrendering Pets

  • Santa Maria Valley Humane Society accepts pets being relinquished by appointments only.
  • We schedule relinquishment appointments on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday between 1 pm & 6 pm.  Call 805-349-3435, extension 5, or email intake@smvhs.org, to schedule a time.
  • We request a $100 donation per pet being surrendered to offset shelter, medical care and training until your pet finds a home.
  • Please fill out and bring with you the Animal Intake Profile for each animal being relinquished.

Dogs

  • We cannot accept dogs with a serious bite history or serious behavior problems.
  • Dogs should be in good overall health and have no contagious diseases.
  • Puppies must be at least 8 weeks old and have received their first DHPPv vaccination 14 days prior to entering the Humane Society.

Cats

  • We cannot accept cats with a serious bite history or serious behavior problems.
  • Cats should be litter box trained and tolerate being indoors.
  • We are unable to accept feral cats.
  • Kittens must be at least 8 weeks old and have received their first FVRCP vaccination 14 days prior to entering the Humane Society.

If we cannot treat a medical issue or we feel we cannot resolve a behavior issue, we will not accept the animal for adoption.  Owner-requested euthanasia may be a viable option for some pet owners.

We do not euthanize animals in our care for lack of space and we do not place time limits on animals waiting for adoption at our Edwin and Jeanne Woods Family Animal Care Complex.

Strays

In an effort to increase the likelihood of a lost pet being reunited with their owner, we do not accept stray animals. If you have found a lost pet, we ask that you contact your local animal services shelter for assistance.
